Customized Curriculum
You will benefit from a customized curriculum based on your internship area.
Adventure
Explore New York City through community events and social outings, like Broadway musicals and food tours.
Quantitative Research
Quantitative Research teams use the scientific method to develop sophisticated and predictive investment models and refine our insights into how the markets will behave. All the while, we remain engaged in the academic community by attending conferences, sharing insights, and participating in lectures.
As an intern, you will help apply quantitative techniques to look for patterns in the world's data and systematically test their theories.
The Quantitative Research Internship Curriculum includes:
- Classes designed to provide an overview of the markets and tools for best practices
- Seminars to discuss the applications of theory to our research process
- Community events and social outings with researchers throughout the summer
Software Engineering
Engineering teams build software, systems, and other infrastructure to manage enormous data sets and juggle thousands of different simulations, reliably, without much intervention.
Our Software Engineering interns are empowered to apply cutting-edge frameworks, domain-specific languages, powerful academic concepts, data demystification strategies, cloud computing technologies, and more to contribute to our powerful platform.
The Engineering Internship Curriculum includes:
- A learning series detailing how full-time Two Sigma employees spend their days
- Recruiting office hours
- One-on-one time to meet with senior engineering leaders

Meet & Greet with CTO
Software Engineering, Houston
Small groups of Software Engineers have been attending a virtual Meet & Greet with the CTO, and today it's my turn. Last week a group of interns met with the head of platform engineering, next week another group will meet with the head of data engineering and infrastructure engineering.

Intern Pod Lunch
Quantitative Research, New York
I have lunch with my Intern Pod and our Buddy today. Some days we talk through our projects, but most days we connect on shared interests, our home towns and university experiences. Today we talked about Two Sigma's monthly poker night. I've never played before, but another member of our Pod taught a Poker 101 class in the Hacker Lab last week.

Intern Reading Group
Quantitative Research, New York
I'm part of an Intern Reading Group, and we review several research papers on topics ranging from alternative data, machine learning, portfolio management, etc. These discussions are informal and collaborative. There is a lot of idea sharing that mirrors an academic setting. This session is being led by a former Two Sigma intern, so I'm interested to hear about her perspective as well as her career trajectory.
I love the fact that I know my project will have impact, and that someone's going to take over it and use it even after I leave the internship program. People at Two Sigma care about what others are working on. If you want to join a project you can just jump on it, and your manager will be supportive and say, "Sure go ahead and be awesome."
Two Sigma Intern
My worry was competitiveness. Cut-throat culture is a stereotype that comes with being in the finance industry, but at Two Sigma it's actually very different.
Two Sigma Intern
I wanted to find a company with a culture driven by scientists, engineers and researchers who believed in the work they were doing. Two Sigma is that kind of company.
Two Sigma Intern
There's no sense of 'this is too difficult for someone to solve.' You will solve the problem or find someone to help you do it.
Engineering Employee
We deeply value our people and we invest in them; we invest in their career.

As an investment adviser, Two Sigma is required to abide by many industry regulations. To assist Two Sigma in staying compliant with these regulations, our Compliance department monitors email communication. In order to increase the efficiency of our current email review process, we set out to develop an automated tool to help identify noteworthy emails and present them to the Compliance team for review through an easy-to-use interface. Towards this goal, our intern created an experimental platform to test and compare machine learning algorithms for labeling emails as noteworthy and a compliance review UI to present these emails to a compliance officer for human review.
One of Two Sigma's critical products feeds predictive data sets to models in simulation environments and live trading. We wanted to use the dynamic structure of Python to make the system easier to use and more secure. To achieve this, we designed and prototyped a Pythonic API, trialled it with users, and iterated to incorporate feedback. We then implemented enhancements to the REST service, improving security and allowing us to centralize system metadata edits. Because the system is mission-critical and requires redundant services in multiple data centers, we devised a change notification system utilizing Kafka to synchronize data updates in real-time. We re-built existing tools in Python to work through this upgraded service. To finish the project, we moved the researchers' interactions with their datasets to the web with an AngularJS UI.
Two Sigma's research teams imagine and devise quantitative trading models using advanced techniques in time series forecasting, machine learning, analyzing real data sets, and applying cutting-edge techniques to derive insights for their teams and projects. We implement state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and test these on real world alpha modeling problems. All Quantitative Research interns have the opportunity to conduct research on financial data analysis, forecasting techniques, and statistical models, as well as apply their skills in a real world setting to learn multiple aspects of quantitative trading and research. In the past, interns collected and analyzed unique, novel, unconventional data sets like ecommerce activity, energy consumption, and traffic patterns to predict behavior of companies, industries, and the global economy.
